Filmmaking brothers Ryan Gielen and Matthew Gielen will tell you that they wouldn't dare compare themselves to the legendary Coen brothers, but the similarities are impossible to ignore.

According to Matt, this tough-love style compliments Ryan's approach. "Ryan has big ideas for our small budget projects, and big ideas can be hardto execute," says Matt. "Together we find that balance, and the result is something like The Graduates."

The Graduates, made for a mere $95,000, looks and feels like a studio film: the images are pristine, as if they were shot on film. But the Gielen brothers actually shot the film on video with a special adapter, and were able to create a film-quality movie without the added expense of film processing.

"We're not competing with $95,000 films," says Matt. "We're competing with every studio film that come s out this summer, and we're proud that we can compete."

So, I saw this movie the other week because a friend told me it was online for free as some kind of a promo. I wasn't expecting much - it looked like another standard teen sex romp movie on the outside - but I found that there was a lot more to "The Graduates" than other movies in its genre.

Let's face it, a lot of comedies made today suck. I mean: "Scream 4"!? "Disaster Movie"? Come on! What happened to the smart, clever movies that people like Steve Martin USED to make, like "The Jerk?" Now all you have to do is say or do something outlandish or weird in order to get a movie made (cough - Will Ferrell).

Judd Apatow's crew are on the right track. They've put the emphasis back on character and relationships, but the people that did "The Graduates" seem to be pushing for more - something with quality acting and grounded relationships - things that people can relate to and connect to and FEEL for.

I don't remember the last time I saw a teen sex comedy or coming of age comedy where I really gave a hoot whether the characters/actors lived or died - and that's just what happened for me with "The Graduates." I liked "The Graduates." I really did. I liked it even MORE when I found out that it was made for under $100,000.00. Now that's impressive. Think of how much money is wasted on such terrible movies, then see this movie - wow.

I saw all these bizarre reviews/comments on their page which really didn't make sense - a rating of 4.4? Weird, vague comments by other users who didn't seem to be talking about the same movie I saw and openly admitting that they only watched 30 mins of a 90 min film? I hope that this blemish doesn't hurt the success of this otherwise well-received film.

The plot is pretty typical, but it's what they DO with it that matters. The cinematography and direction is pretty straight forward, which makes sense for a film like this on this scale - you can only do so much with a small budget and you only SHOULD do so much with a character-driven piece.

The acting? From these unknowns? Really kind of impressive - I saw that Nick Vergara, who plays Mattie in the film, got commended by my favorite website: FilmschoolRejects.com. I agree with their review. There really are no weak links in this film in terms of the talent.

I watched a free sneak preview online and was really, really surprised. I get their email updates and the last one said ten sold-out screenings in a row, so I was curious, and I get it.

They don't make coming of age comedies like this anymore. This is more satire than a straight up comedy. This is the kind of film you quote for weeks afterwards. It reminded of John Hughes instead of Superbad.

Which I love because I was in high school during the John Hughes era and I'm so friggin tired of the crap that passes for coming-of-age comedies now. How many van wilders or cheerleading movies do we need before we revolt.

Anyways was pleasantly surprised because I know the film was low budget, so I expected low budget, but I never felt like I was watching a "low budget" movie. I laughed, I cared about the characters, and when it was over i felt like I had gone to the beach with them.

The genre of this movie was VERY clear right away. A coming-of-age-teen-comedy. I hate teen comedies! But this is also an indie film and I love discovering a great indie film so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did. I was really surprised by the intelligence of this movie.

There was definitely humping, and drinking, and swearing, and boobies but after every punch line there was a moment of sincerity that sort of caught me by surprise. I felt like it started off with one dimensional characters (the standard American Pie crew) but evolved into real kids with real conflicts.

Also, the cast was solid. I was really impressed with these unknowns. Especially with the older brother character, Josh. He played the perfect creepy/cocky older brother. And the supporting role, Stuart... he's ridiculously original. I'm sure I'll see him in something again. And the 'good girl' that starts smoking to be cool was hysterical.

But, again, not your standard teen comedy. No one was a one note character. Everyone had a journey. I do not want to spoil anything so I'll just say that some were funny, some were sweet and one or two were pretty deep and they were all sincere.

I saw a sneak preview and I had to write something because I honestly think it could become a cult classic if people ever found out about it. It's got the great one liners, memorable moments and most importantly personality and an original point of view.

The nature of the game is unclear at first, but it appears to be a sort of live action role-playing game that integrates directly into the player's real life. After taking a full day test and physical, Nicholas is informed that the game company cannot serve him. However, Nicholas soon discovers that this is false and the game has begun. The game focuses on a key moment of Nicholas's life when, as a child, he witnessed his father committing suicide by leaping off their family home, the same home Nicholas lives in. Significantly, Nicholas's father took his life on his 48th birthday, the same age as Nicholas is now.

As the movie progresses, evidence mounts that the game is actually an elaborate scheme, but each time Nicholas thinks he has uncovered the truth, he finds that a new layer of complexity has been revealed and that his previous assumptions were false. The Game quickly escalates into a no-holds-barred assault on everything Nicholas values, and his carefully ordered life and business empire rapidly disintegrate around him as The Game takes control. An employee (Unger) at first assists him in escaping from the clutches of the CRS operatives, but after a series of narrow escapes and repeated attempts on his life, Nicholas is captured, transported to Mexico and subjected to a premature burial (albeit one he easily escapes from), all while having his bank accounts drained by the employee who was pretending to help him. The Game is now revealed to be an elaborate scam to relieve the power elite of their property and their lives.

Alienated from his friends and his trusted lawyer, Nicholas comes to a realization about his life and reconciles himself with his ex-wife, who has happily remarried and is about to give birth to her second child. Nicholas soon becomes desperate and retrieves a hidden handgun from his home, where upon he heads directly into the offices of The Game company and takes one of the staff hostage. The movie comes to a climax on the roof of the game company's skyscraper. A jumpy Nicholas demands answers. The employee appears surprised by the gun, telling Nicholas that the game company thought they had replaced any real firearms Nicholas could access with fakes. A door opens, surprising Nicholas, and he fires without looking, only to reveal that he has shot his brother holding a bottle of champagne and dressed for his birthday celebration. Stricken with remorse, Nicholas leaps off the skyscraper and crashes through a glass ceiling, but he lands safely in an airbag. There he finds his family and friends awaiting his arrival and The Game is revealed to have just been a game. The accounts have not been drained, the gun was replaced with one firing blanks, and his brother is alive. As they embrace, Conrad confesses that he arranged the game as a way to shake his brother back to reality and make his brother enjoy life, to which the two break down in tears. Nicholas then offers to split the cost of the game to which his brother happily accepts (a small scene where Nicholas comments 'wow' to the cost is also included).

At this time of year we all look at staying in and spending time with the family. Christmas is a great time to catch up with everyone and watch movies and soaps. What a lot of people do is visit their local cinema. So there are a variety of movies aiming for the Christmas top spot and this year it looks as though Twilight the vampire romance movie is going to succeed.

The story evolves around Bella Swan who has always been a bit different from the rest of the crowd; she didn't really care about materialistic stuff and what people actually think of her. The story begins when her mother remarries and instead she goes to live with her father in a small town. She resumes with her normal life as expected, until she bumps into Edward Cullen who catches her eye straight away. They then get brushed into a passionate relationship and all is going well. But! This is a movie so not is as everything seems, Edward Cullen has a dark secret, he is secretly a vampire. Bella then becomes a target of other vampires who want her blood, but Edward will do anything to protect her.

As you can see the film has a great storyline, it is actually about a vampire being nice rather than the traditional ways. The film which opened mid December in the USA has already been a smash by raking in $70 million in its first week. In the UK the movie has already raked in over 2.5 million which knocked off animated adventure Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa from the top spot. The 2009 release of the new Star Trek movie is simply titled "Star Trek" and is implementing an entirely new cast. Movie trailers available on the Internet outline a look into Captain Kirk's past and how his life went from being a carefree child to the captain of a Starfleet Starship. An entirely new cast is expected to bring a new life to the original characters all "trekkies" know and love. Quantum of Solace Falls Short

Daniel Craig return as James Bond in the next in the series after Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace take off where we left off in the Royale film. Bond is still holding the anger and resentment of losing his girl in his last undertakings. He decides to go after the men in question of killing his woman, to find some answers and get some revenge.

The film starts off with an action sequence right off the bat, with a high speed chase sequence. But before the sequence they don't open with the classic Bond opening. The part where bond walks out and shoots someone spying on him. They leave that till the end.

In fact, the film leaves out many of the expected 'Bond series' trademarks ingredients. When Bond is drinking, he doesn't know what's in his drink, that's a first. It's part vodka part this, part something else. Not the original dry Vodka Martini shaken not stirred. That doesn't quite bother one as much as the fact that Q the inventor is not involved either. Without Q, most of the cool gadgets and extra laughs are left out. Bond's car was fast, and nothing else. I could see the Transporter series if that's all I wanted to see was fast cars and some fighting. Normally James Bond is with a lot of women for playful fun in the series. Not so in this film, Craig's character only sleeps with a woman to get out of a bad situation.

On top of all this, there is not much humor to the film. The somewhat funny line is when M says to Bond, "You look like hell." Not many people in the theater laughed at that one. The traditional bond films where always more campy with plenty of one liners. Films like Tomorrow Never Dies and Goldeneye just seem to be more enjoyable films. They help you escape from reality, where Quantum of Solace brings you back to reality and half the film you feel depressed that Bond's life is so hard. Usually one goes to the movies to escape from reality, or have a fun adventure, not a tormented adventure. Some people may say 'well its just gritty and raw' but does that make it a better Bond than the old films. It was just too preachy, if you want to be preached to, you go to your preacher. This movie fell short of my expectations for a fun adventure, plus there wasn't much spying, Bond was basically a hit man. I've already seen that Bond film, it's called "License to Kill."

Exploitation films are a type of film that rely heavily on marketing that exploits or takes advantage of topics that are taboo, forbidden, or sensationalized and will attract a lot of popular and word-of-mouth attention without traditional marketing.

Exploitation films have existed since the earliest days of Hollywood.

For Example, two notorious films from the 1930s are:

"Reefer Madness(1938). This is considered THE archetypal sensationalized anti-drug movie, but it's really an exploitation film made to capitalize on the hot taboo subject of marijuana use. Like many exploitation films of the time, "Reefer Madness" tried to make a quick buck off of a forbidden subject while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930. The Code forbade the portrayal of immoral acts like drug use. (The illegal drug traffic must not be portrayed in such a way as to stimulate curiosity concerning the use of, or traffic in, such drugs; nor shall scenes be approved which show the use of illegal drugs, or their effects, in detail.)

"The film toured around the country for many years - often being re-edited and re-titled ("Tell Your Children", "Dope Addict", "Doped Youth", "Love Madness", "The Burning Question"). It was re-discovered in the early 1970s by NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and screened again as an example of the government's demonization of marijuana. NORML may have been confused about the film's sponsorship since one of the film's distributors, Dwain Esper, testified to the Arizona Supreme Court that "Reefer Madness" was not a trashy exploitation film but was actually sponsored by the U.S. Government - a convincing lie, but a lie nonetheless."

And "Sex Madness (1938). This is another typical sex exploitation film from the 1930s - complete with wild parties, sex out of wedlock, lesbianism, etc. A chorus girl's exposure to the "casting couch" also exposes her to syphilis. Exploitation filmmakers hoped to capitalize on the taboo subjects of venereal disease, sex before marriage, lesbianism, etc. while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 which forbade a film from containing such content. Films like this would tour the United States for years - mostly being shown in rundown, skid row theaters. This film has been re-edited and re-titled ("Human Wreckage", "They Must Be Told", "Trial Marriage", "About Trial Marriage") many times to attract the same audience to film, to take advantage of a taboo subject which may have gotten press recently or to appease local censors who disapproved of the film's content."

Exploitation films usually rely heavily on sensational advertising regardless of the quality of the film. Very often, exploitation films were low budget and of low quality in every sense of the word. But this, however, was not always the case. Exploitation films sometimes attract critical attention and cult followings.

Exploitation films often exploited events that occur in the news and are in the short term public consciousness that a major film studios may not take up due to the length of time of producing a major film.

Some times anti-government films will also exploit a growing minority sentiment. For example there were many war films make about the Korean and Vietnam wars before the major studios took interest in those topics.

Some exploitation films also exploit major studio projects. The lower budget films often use a faster production schedule and can take advantage of major studio advertising on a particular topic or film. For example, Edward L. Alperson produced William Cameron Menzies' Invaders from Mars to beat Paramount Pictures prestigious George Pal's version of The War of the Worlds into the cinemas. Pal's The Time Machine was also beaten to the cinemas by Robert Clarke's Edgar G. Ulmer film Beyond the Time Barrier (1960). As a result, many major studios, producers, and stars keep their projects secret.

The story of Naruto began when sixteen years ago when a Nine-tailed demon fox attacked the ninja village of Konohagakure. Its power had the ability to flatten mountains and bring forth tsunamis. It was destruction, chaos and death rolled into one.

Konoha, the strongest of the five shinobi nations, was on the brink of destruction. In order to save the village from total annihilation, the village leader known as the Forth Hokage gave his life to seal the demon fox into an infant Naruto.

Before dying, the Forth Hokage asked that Naruto be treated as a hero. But people in Konoha were suspicious. Instead of granting the Fourth Hokage his dying wish, people began to shun Naruto and treat him as if her were the demon fox himself. Naruto grew up without friends of family. He expressed himself by pulling pranks on other people as a way of getting attention. His school work suffered and as a result he failed three times in the ninja exams.

A teacher at the ninja academy, Mizuki told Naruto that there was another way to pass the test. That is to steal a scroll from the Third Hokage. All Naruto had to do was to master a technique from the scroll and he would pass the test. Unknown to Naruto, Mizuki was tricking him. He only wanted the scroll for himself as this scroll contained hidden and forbidden techniques important to Konoha.

But Iruka found out Mizuki's plot and intercepted Naruto and Mizuki. During the confrontation, Naruto found out that he was the container of the Nine Tailed Demon Fox, and finally knew why the villagers hated him. Mizuki urged Naruto to release the demon fox's power and to kill Iruka. But Iruka intervened and told Naruto that he was not a monster. Enraged, Mizuki attackes Iruka but before he could strike, Naruto unleashes the technique he learned from the forbidden scroll. He creates hundreds of clones and attacks Mizuki. Shocked that such a prankster and failure could master a high level technique in a short time, Mizuki is stunned and finally defeated by Naruto.

Iruka allows Naruto to graduate and gives him his forehead protector as a gift. Iruka befriends Naruto and finally Naruto gets the recognition he desperately wanted.

As a graduate of the ninja academy, Naruto teams up with Sakura and Sasuke. They accomplish missions and tasks under the supervision of their Jounin (high ninja) teacher, Kakashi. Along the way, they meet other people and learn more about being a ninja.

As the series progresses, Naruto will have to learn about losing friends, teachers, and working hard to obtain his ultimate goal: to be Hokage.

Naruto is an ongoing manga series created by Misashi Kishimoto. It was first published in Japan's Shounen Jump in 1998. Iron Man
I am still in two minds about this film, we have so many superhero films coming out as of late that it's hard to judge, but Iron Man looked potentially great, it ended quite weirdly but I will be tuning in to the sequel.

The Incredible Hulk
Another remake of the orginal, The Hulk was noted down as a bit of a flop, (to be honest I quite enjoyed the first one, maybe a bit too much CGI. But this instalment has a new cast a better story line and looks a lot better.

The Eye
This movie was good but it did disappoint me a little, I expected to have a lot more out of your seat scares, one of the better oriental remakes.

There are also many more films such as Mamma Mia, Valkyrie and Wall-E but I believe the reason that The Dark Knight was most loved film in 2008 is because of the simple fact that it changed its franchise a bit more; the film is a lot more serious and realistic now. It has branded itself a lot darker and that is definitely how Batman films should be.

My Different Types of Music Students

This is a little bit, about how I became a small time music teacher. My own music teacher was a longhaired, short, stout guy named Timir. He taught music in our company sponsored classes on each Sunday. I was already playing around with my guitar for a few months before I gathered enough courage to go and have a peek into his class.

A lot of people surrounded him as it was one introduction class and he was saying "The first thing you need to do is to buy a guitar" ... and he explained what make the guitar should be etc...

So I joined the class and got his default indifference in return. I learned later that he was indifferent to you by default until you showed up at least 5 times in a row. Later I learned the reason... most people came with visions of rock starts jumping around or lover boys sitting with a girl playing a song on guitar.

However, when they find out that they can't even play a chord or a succession of 5 notes decently after 3 weeks of practice, their dreams give in to reality and their guitars put for sale in our company website.

Music teaching can be quite interesting... as I became more proficient; I found a few wide-eyed 'fans' surrounding me. It appears that I was the only student among a hundred or so who could play the guitar and also sing decently at the same time.

So I became a little, half-learned teacher in my own right. The girls particularly seem quite fascinated with anybody just trying to sing, let alone somebody who can carry a tune to some degree of dignity.

So soon, I was a music teacher, however small time. I went to music website (s), downloaded some chords, did some practice and would play it for girls, ignore boys and then go ahead and be joined by some other girls during lunch. It has been happening for some time now and I am really enjoying it. During this time, I have learned a little about teaching music in the meanwhile.

To keep students returning to you for some time, first thing is to impress a new student by playing your best song. You have to become their instant role model or you will soon lose them. Myself, I was not concerned with any payment, since I didn't get any.

Therefore, if it is a boy, I tell him how hard it is going to be and that it's a long journey etc. However if it's a girl, I just encourage her to come here and learn with me for a long time. Then, there are sincere students and there are quick result seekers. The sincere types are interested in basics while the others are happy to learn a tune half-heartedly and play it in more mediocre manner.

There are those who are systematic and then there are trigger-happy types. The trigger-happy ones come in two varieties, first is just impatient. This type will keep making same mistakes and not really learn at the end of it. Then there are talented cowboys, who are impatient because they learn things very fast.

I like this type, as they give me instant credit of teaching some trick so well. There are some who are stuck in a rut; they just keep playing the same thing for months without realizing that they haven't really progressed. Then there are those who wouldn't finish a tune halfway before jumping to another.

I have developed my own tastes for students for whom I am really willing to spend some effort. Of course, all girls qualify, but for filtering others, I am learning my own (real) music teacher's tricks on avoiding some and focusing on others. I think an 80/20 principle applies well to music teaching as in any job, which requires a lot of patience and hard work.

My favorite responsibility from Edward Scissorhands was probably the set. I can't be sure whether or not this film was all shot in a studio, but in interest of my paper, I'm going to say it was. There was the quaint little suburban town where most of the movie took place, and there was Edward's house, which brought forth a feeling of foreboding just from the look of it.

The first element of design I'd like to talk about was my most favorite, and in my opinion, best-used element, color. The contrast in this movie, in all seriousness, was some of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen. All the houses in the town were these goofy pastel colors, which, by themselves, would have represented an oddball in the neighborhood, but since everyone had pastel-colored houses, really brought the community together and just basically showed similarities in culture and lifestyles down there. Then, you have Edward's house, which is all black and gloomy, which really segregates him from the townsfolk. But, he also has his beautifully colorful garden in front of his home, which shows that there's another side to Edward, a nice side that you wouldn't expect from the looks of his house. And, though this wouldn't tie in to the set responsibility, the differences in the hair color of Edward and Kim show the separation that those two are experiencing, which shows distance in the face of love.

The next element up for discussion is line. I felt that this element was a key in giving this film the look and feel Tim Burton was going after. Nearly all the lines were vertical lines, which showed that this wasn't the most stable of situations ever concocted. Everything just seemed a lot more rigid and cold with the vertical lines, especially in the scenes when the townspeople begin searching frantically for Edward. Also, everything was cut off by angles, there were basically no curves whatsoever in this movie, and it showed that this place was confusing, and not particularly warm to boot. And again, this doesn't follow the set responsibility, but Edward was created using essentially all vertical lines and sharp angles, while the townspeople had some curve to them, and had more horizontal lines, which again shows the differences between Edward and everyone else.

Shape is the last element that I would like to talk about before I conclude. All the shapes in Edward Scissorhands were either square or angular, there were absolutely no round shapes that come to mind. This shows the rigidity of the town, and the lack of flexibility of the townspeople. I mean, yes, most of the people were kind enough to him, for a time, but some people wanted nothing to do with him, such as Kim's boyfriend and that crazy 'holier-than-thou' lady, which just shows the cold nature of some people. And as for the set, the triangle shape was used a lot, and though it is supposed to be reminiscent of stability, it really gave me a sense of awkwardness, confusion, and disarray. It just seems like an oddball shape, and it is used frequently, so you have the repetitive feeling of awkwardness throughout the whole of the film.

In my opinion, the three elements that I commented on were the most essential to the feeling of the film, which is why I discussed them. That is not to say that the other elements did not have huge roles in creating the mood of the film, because they did. I think that Tim Burton got the look and feel he was after, as he commented, he wanted it to seem like "and adult fairy-tale", which it certainly did. Without the contrasts in color, line, and shape between Edward and the townspeople, the movie would not have had the same feeling as it did. I thought this movie was just phenomenal, and the design was absolutely crucial in doing so.

I had expected something good out of this movie, prior to entering the movie house. Perhaps it was because of the intriguing poster, or maybe even the title. I didn't get to view it right from the start (as I came in around 20 minutes into the movie), and I was planning to stick around longer just to get to see the start. However, right when I caught a glimpse of the cinematography, I knew I made the wrong choice. It was boring. It was draggy. The cinematography was something that a student could have done. There was too much dead air. The story is too predictable (like I've seen this slasher type of movie a million times)and it was too shallow. Even the peaks were futile efforts in trying to tickle the audience's "scare nerves". The ending was worse than the rest of the movie. I've never regretted watching a movie and felt like I wasted my money on watching a movie until this one. To sum it all up: this is a waste of money.
